Open since 2022, Mezio Biological Park is already one of the main attractions in Northern Portugal. Therefore, if you are planning to visit the Peneda-Gerês Natural Park (PNPG), you cannot miss out on the Biological Park, located at Mezio’s entrance, and all the activities it has in store for your entire family – from kids to adults.

The Mezio Gate Biological Park

With the aim of promoting environmental education and direct contact with nature, the Mezio Biological Park (or Mezio Zoological Park) is the first facility in the PNPG that allows visitors to directly interact with the fauna and flora of this protected area. Born to preserve endangered native animal species, the Biological Park already attracts visitors from all over the country.

Therefore, if you are a nature tourism enthusiast, this Park combines visitation practices, preservation, and natural conservation, providing an unparalleled experience.

The Fauna

The Biological Park spans across 11 hectares and houses 22 animal species. Among wild animals, farm animals, birds of prey, and poultry, visitors can observe the Garrano horse, the Cachena cow, wild boar, roe deer, and even weasels.

Distributed across six natural habitats, the residents of Mezio Biological Park are part of native species facing extinction. These animals, coming from other rehabilitation centers, no longer have the conditions to be reintroduced into the wild, finding in the Biological Park a place to live out their lives in exceptional conditions. This experience allows for contact with species that are difficult to observe in their natural habitat.

The Flora

When it comes to the flora of the Biological Park, which spans 3.5 hectares, it features over 50 plant species. This area was inaugurated back in 2014 and provides excellent cool shade for visitors on warmer days. Additionally, visitors can explore the Park and its flora on a 1.5 km walking trail.

Mezio Gate: All Activities

The Biological Park is nestled within the Mezio Gate – one of the five entry points to the Peneda-Gerês National Park. This space serves as a true gateway to the Soajo and Peneda mountains, providing you with all the necessary details to venture into the forests and hills, and to enjoy moments of relaxation and family fun.

In total, we’re talking about 8 hectares with spaces for both kids and adults, offering activities to immerse yourself in nature. In addition to the Mezio Zoological Park, you can also visit the Village of the Little Ones, the Biodiversity Park, the Rural and Ethnographic Museum, the Interpretive Center of the Territory, the Viewpoint, the Birdwatching Observatory, the Adventure Park, and much more!
