Christmas in the heart of Alto Minho truly begins when the lights of the Enchanted Forest are switched on, on the first of December! Over the past few years, this Christmas magic has captured the hearts of 73,000 people the moment they saw it… affectionately known by locals as “a Travanca.” This year, the magic is renewed at Porta do Mezio, one of the five gateways to the Peneda-Gerês National Park (PNPG).

The lights, the main attraction, promise to transform the landscapes, featuring lush vegetation and waterfalls, into a luminous and magical spectacle. But this year, the Parish Council of Cabana Maior promises much more: in addition to the Christmas decorations, visitors can enjoy various activities for all ages, explore the Christmas Market, savor the delights at the Food Court, and witness the dazzling light show.

The Enchanted Forest at Porta do Mezio offers many surprises and activities, ranging from music to theater and special spaces for children, ensuring fun for the whole family. The 2024 edition is already underway and will be open until January 12, 2025.

Is there a ticket price?

Unlike previous years, this year it will be necessary to purchase a ticket to visit the Enchanted Forest at Porta do Mezio. The price is symbolic: only €2. To ensure everyone can experience the magic of Christmas, entry is free for children up to 8 years old.

What are the visiting hours?

The Enchanted Forest will be open from December 1, 2024, to January 12, 2025, except for two days: December 24 and 31, when it will be closed for family Christmas celebrations. On December 25 and January 1, it will operate on special hours, from 3:00 PM to midnight. On all other days, the opening hours will be from 9:30 AM to midnight.

How to get there?

Take the opportunity to enjoy dinner at the Food Court.

It’s natural for walks through the Enchanted Forest to work up your appetite. During the week, from 4:00 PM to midnight, and on weekends from 2:00 PM to midnight, you can also treat yourself at the Food Court. A space designed for the whole family, featuring the finest flavors of the region.

Enchanted Forest of Porta do Mezio

Although it celebrates the Christmas season, the Enchanted Forest also has another purpose: raising awareness for the recovery of a forest area devastated by a major fire in the Peneda-Gerês National Park. However, due to the high number of visitors in 2023, the event almost didn’t take place for safety reasons.

The challenge was overcome by changing the event’s location, which is expected to welcome around 100,000 visitors in 2024.

Other Activities to Enjoy at Mezio

In addition to the Enchanted Forest, Mezio and the entire Peneda-Gerês National Park are excellent destinations for nature activities. So, if you’re considering visiting this region, explore the other activities it has to offer!

Biological Park of Porta do Mezio

The Biological Park of Mezio is the first facility in the Peneda-Gerês National Park that allows visitors to experience direct contact with the fauna and flora of this protected area.
